Local Strategic Partnerships and Community Planning

Scarborough

North Yorkshire Coast Community partnership

The North Yorkshire Coast Community Partnership covers the Borough of Scarborough and is working to achieve:“An outward-looking, vibrant and prosperous place where people have opportunities and support to achieve their full potential”.

Through its Community Strategy the Partnership is working to reduce disadvantage and inequality and achieve:
  • Prosperous communities underpinned by a strong, diverse local economy, with high quality opportunities for education and skills development for people of all ages;

  • Safe and strong communities characterised by respect for each other and the environment, where diversity is respected and people have opportunities to become more involved in local decision making;

  • The protection of our cultural assets for future generations, so the outstanding natural beauty of our rural and urban landscapes and our shared culture and rich heritage is maintained, protected and developed sensitively; and

  • Healthy and vibrant communities where people can enjoy good health, good housing and where there are opportunities for all to participate in activities that make people feel good about themselves.

Partnership Structure

Community Partnership Board

The Community Partnership consists of a Board, four Area Forums and a number of specific working groups. Through the Board there are also links with key thematic partnerships operating across the Borough covering areas such as housing, skills, crime, younger and older people.

The Board includes key public sector organisations, representatives from thematic partnerships, community representatives nominated by the Area Forums, voluntary and private sector representatives and a number of “Champions” covering issues such as diversity, environment and culture.

The Partnership Board is Chaired by Tom Fox, leader of Scarborough Borough Council. The Vice Chair is Stephanie Sturrock, Chief Officer of Coast and Moors Voluntary Action.

Current Priorities

For 2008 the partnership is focusing on a number of priority projects including:-

  • Alcohol (delivery of the Alcohol Harm Reduction Strategy developed in 2007, including delivery of a Home Drinking Campaign).
  • Eco footprinting project, focusing on procurement practices.
  • Co2 Emissions reduction
  • Older People (developing older persons strategy for the Borough)
  • Refreshing the action plan for the community strategy (during 2008)
  • Developing the Area Forums

Area Forums

The Area Forums give a more community focused, area based perspective to the Community Partnership. They were introduced during 2007 to enable local people to give their views on issues that affect their community, to influence the work of LSP partners and to provide a local forum for partners and the community to work together to address issues of concern. Forums elect their own Chairs and each Area Forum’s business is managed by a Support Group made up a local people and local service providers.

Area Forums are currently progressing a range of local issues including transport, housing, crime and disorder and toilet provision, as well as developing specific community projects including a mobile youth bus pilot in the southern area, intergenerational projects in Scarborough and investigating the feasibility of a farmers market in one of the villages.
