Physical and sensory impairment partnership board
The multi-agency physical and sensory impairment (PSI) partnership board was
set up in June 2006 and is a member of the NYSP Adult Strategic Partnership thematic
group.
The aims of the PSI Board :
- to ensure services are planned and delivered in ways that enable disabled people
to exercise choice and control over how their additional needs are met; and
- to promote access to the full range of services that many people take for granted,
in keeping with the social model of disability
The primary focus of the partnership board is on people of working age. However,
areas of service development will include people over 65 and young disabled people
in transition to adult services where this is considered relevant and effective.
The partnership board has developed a three year plan called the "Equal lives
strategy 2007 - 2010". The strategy covers a wide range of themes, for example:
health, housing, transport, employment, social care services, access and information.
A multi-agency action plan has also been produced. The strategy and action plan
are available on request from
Carol.S.Johnson@northyorks.gov.uk but are currently being updated.
Membership
Representatives of disabled people and carers are elected from the four local
area Reference Groups to attend the PSI Board. Two members are elected from each
locality group and one Carer represents carer issues for the county. Each of
the partner organisations agreed to provide a Board representative.
The partnership board meets four times a year and membership includes:
- Disabled people and Carer's representatives
- Voluntary sector representative
- North Yorkshire County Council
- North Yorkshire district and borough councils
- North Yorkshire's primary care and acute health trusts
- North Yorkshire Police
- North Yorkshire Ambulance Service
- North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service Employment service (Jobcentre Plus)social

Social Model of Disability
The ‘social model’ of disability requires a change in society’s values and practices
in order to remove the barriers to participation which truly dis-able people.
The social model has been worked out by disabled people who feel that the individual model does not provide an adequate explanation for their exclusion from mainstream society – because their experiences have shown them that, in reality, most of their problems are not caused by their impairments, but by the way society is organised and
the barriers that exist.
