Responding to major emergencies in North Yorkshire
A guide to information on Civil Contingencies and Resilience
The North Yorkshire Resilience Forum prepares and delivers plans to deal with
emergencies across the county. The Forum is made up of executive officers from
the emergency services, health agencies, Environment Agency and local authorities.
There are Resilience Forums all over the country based on police geographical
boundaries.
The North Yorkshire Local Resilience Forum works with other regional and national
groups to make sure that the county is prepared to cope with any type of emergency
and has appropriate plans in place to deal with it.
Local Resilience Forums are a legally constituted body established by the Civil
Contingencies Act 2004. The Act divides responders into two groups, Category 1
and Category 2. The duty to plan and respond to emergencies is placed on those
organisations identified in the Act as Category 1 responders.
What is ‘A Major Emergency’?
The Civil Contingencies Act places a duty on category one responders to plan
for emergencies and to keep the public informed both before and during an emergency.
It also requires them to publish a community risk register of the risks faced
by residents and those visiting and working within the County.
