Four workshops designed to build capacity and achieve greater collaboration across
the nine local authorities and their partners in response to climate change.
Funded by the Regional Improvement and Efficiency Partnership (RIEP) and coordinated
by Arup.

Workshop 1 (27 November 2009): Reducing greenhouse gas emissions in your area:
How to increase regional economic and energy security whilst reducing environmental
impacts.
The workshop explored how issues of climate change, economic development, energy
supply and fuel security affect York and North Yorkshire, reflecting upon the
distinctive land use of the County and its rural issues. Participants were equipped
with a high level brief of current debates and climate change projections. The
facilitated discussion focused on the major sources of emissions in Local Authority
areas, which of these contribute to National Indicator 186 (Per capita reduction
in CO2 emissions in the Local Authority area) and how green house gas emissions
from these sources can be reduced.
Workshop 2 (4 December 2009): Managing Future Risk: Adaptation to a changing
environment.
The workshop considered the regional climate change impacts applicable to York
and North Yorkshire and looked at methods for assessing and managing risks. Adaptation
also means taking advantage of potential opportunities associated with a changing
environment. Participants were equipped with an understanding of key climate change
impacts, the timescales involved, the tools available to manage risk and how National
Indicator 188 (Planning to adapt to climate change) is measured.
Workshop 3 (29 January 2010): Organisational Efficiency and Cost Savings: Reducing
greenhouse gas emissions from council activities.
The workshop focused on increasing efficiency and cost savings in Local Authority
operations. Discussion of National Indicator 185 (CO2 reduction from local authority
operations) provided ‘low hanging’ examples achievable in any Authority. The
session was illustrated by best practice from across the region and nationally.

Workshop 4 (8 February 2010): Building Bridges: Collaboration, cost savings and
best practice in sub-regional planning.
The Workshop brought together decision makers from councils and delivery partners
across York and North Yorkshire. Ways of ensuring effective collaboration were
discussed and in paticular how participants can take meaningful action to improve
Authority performance, deliver benefits for local residents and meet National
Indicator targets.
